Sheets: Every two weeks
As a general rule of thumb, health experts recommend pulling back the duvet every morning to let sheets breathe and help get rid of dust mites. As for washing, according to The Good Housekeeping, you may want to change your sheets and pillow cases at least every two weeks.

Regular vacuuming/sweeping: Every one or two weeks
As this article points out, “food, dust, pet hair, and dirt from the outside world build up faster than you might think.” Whether you have a carpet or hardwood floors, make sure you sweep or vacuum your house thoroughly every week or fortnight.
Carpet: Every six to 12 months
Did you know that over 200,000 bacteria may inhabit every 2.5 centimetres of your carpet? In addition to your regular vacuuming routine, professional steam cleaning every six to 12 months (or more frequently if you have a pet running around the home) can help you get rid of harmful bacteria.
Bathroom & toilet bowl: Once a week
Unsurprisingly, the bathroom is one of the rooms that need the most attention, so a weekly clean-up is highly recommended – from scrubbing out the toilet bowl through to wiping off mirrors and changing bath towels.
Kitchen benchtop: Every day
Perhaps another obvious one, but kitchen surfaces need to be wiped down often and thoroughly – every day if you’re a regular cook. Focus on benchtops near the sink area, and make sure you use a clean kitchen sponge and washcloth at least once a month (or even better, every two weeks).
Bath mats: Once a week
According to Canstar Blue, bath mats should be washed once a week, and it’s a good idea to hang them to dry after every shower, to reduce the risk of mildew.
Mattress: Every six months
Mattresses need some form of maintenance too. Vacuum the top of your mattress every six months, and use a damp cloth to remove any stains that might have accumulated. If you haven’t already, you may want to buy a mattress protector for extra protection.
Curtains: Once or twice a year
When was the last time you laundered your curtains? To keep them fresh and remove dust and dirt, consider washing your curtains once or twice every year, but be sure to read the label first to check whether dry cleaning or hand-washing is required.
Windows: Twice a year
When it comes to cleaning your windows, twice a year seems to be the ‘sweet spot’. But choose those two days wisely. According to experts, “though sunlight can help illuminate how dirty your windows are, you’re better off washing them on a dry, cloudy day. Why? Because strong heat from the sun will dry cleaning fluid more quickly, which could leave hard-to-remove streaks and stains.”
Oven: Every three to six months
If your oven isn’t self-cleaning, unfortunately you’ll need to apply a little elbow grease. Experts suggest cleaning your oven at least every three to six months, using a mix of bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and water. Feel free to spot-clean throughout the month as well.
Dogs: As needed
The question is not how often, but how dirty your dog is: if your furry friend is dirty and ‘smelly’, then it’s time to give them a good bath. Plus, how often your dog needs to be groomed largely depends on their coat type – here are some grooming tips to get you started.
